Dr. Burres:
Thank you for joining NASS and welcome! Your membership will be active effective January, 1, 2003. You will receive a new member packet the first or second week of January containing valuable information and detailing all of the benefits of NASS membership.
Regarding your questions: NASS' current membership is just over 3,400. The majority of our members are Orthopedic Surgeons, followed by Neurosurgeons and then Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation physicians. I can tell you that our members are mostly MD's, DOs or PhDs. You are the only Chiropractor in Nevada listed as a member of NASS. Right now, we have chiropractic members in WI and KS. We also have one Chiropractor member from Texas. If you have any other questions, please let me know. And again, welcome to NASS!

The History of NASS
The History of North American Spine Society
The First Ten Years
By John D. Schlegel, MD.. (1994)
Introduction
This year, the North American Spine Society celebrates its 10th anniversary. In a mere decade the society has exponentially expanded; addressing and confronting the clinical problems faced by spine patients and their physicians. The society's history mirrors the history of spinal disease itself, being both complex and controversial. Certainly, as we look back into history, it is apparent that despite centuries of research and treatment, much of spinal disease is still misunderstood; though we may approach spinal problems more prudently, in fact our impotence is still quite obvious. At this 10-year mark of the North American Spine Society, we should remember the long colorful past of bipedal man's relationship with his vertebral column and to marvel at what has been accomplished to propel us to the present. This historical perspective allows for a gracious celebration of our peers, mentors and colleagues who forged the foundation of modern spinal medicine and this Society. Though a complete listing is impossible, some names must be recognized: Drs. Charles Burton, Edmund T. Dombrowski, David Duffner, Edward Froning, William Kirkaldy-Willis, Casey Lee, Vert Mooney, Robert Morrow, Richard Nasca, Elmer Nix, Charles Ray, David Selby, James Walt Simmons, Robert Watkins, Arthur White, and Leon Wiltse.
At the 10-year mark the North American Spine Society is a strong organization with a gifted past and a bright future. Those who have dedicated so much to the successful framework of NASS are here commended, and the hopes of future improvements in spinal diagnosis and treatments over the next 10 years and beyond are assured.
Advocacy and the National Association of Spine Specialists
The National Association of Spine Specialists is a legislative advocacy organization promoting the needs of spine disorder patients and spine care specialists. While the North American Spine Society is open to clinicians only, the National Association of Spine Specialists welcomes industry to partner with our ever-growing membership base of more than 3,000 multidisciplinary spine specialists.
The National Association of Spine Specialists monitors pending health care legislation and advocates for outcomes most beneficial to spine disorder patients through education and lobbying efforts.
Spine Care History
The NASS Archives Task Force collects and archives documents and artifacts to chronicle NASS' history and to create a museum dedicated to the history of spine care. Collection and organization of items from the membership, industry and NASS' own records are ongoing.
Other benefits of the archives project include an educational exhibit at the annual meeting and the Signature Edition Collection, a special collection of books related to spine care and education with messages and signatures by the authors.
The NASS Archives Task Force has also developed Spine History on the Internet, a directory of Internet resources related to the history of the spine, spine care and medicine. Access it by clicking on the link in the previous sentence or request a print copy from the NASS office by calling toll free: (877) SpineDr [(877) 774-6337].
If you have an item you wish to donate to the NASS archives project or would like to suggest an addition to the directory, please e-mail Pam Hayden, Senior Manager of Scientific Affairs, at hayden@spine.org, or you can call her at (815) 675-0021.
